The Stewardship of Human Capability

Leadership in the Age of AI

AI is changing more than what organisations can accomplish. Decisions about where and how AI enters work also change what people practise, what they delegate, where authority sits, what they learn and what they become capable of doing next.

This paper explores the leadership responsibility that follows: how we extend what becomes possible through AI while remaining attentive to what our ways of working are developing in the human system.

At its centre is Cognitive Independence — the integrated presence of Awareness, Agency and Accountability — and a governing proposition:

The way we navigate today must leave us more capable of navigating tomorrow.

ACIA: A Model of Cognitive Independence — Insight Paper

ACIA

A Model of Cognitive Independence

ACIA is an original model I have developed to describe purposeful human movement: how people and human systems perceive what is happening, develop genuine options, author direction, put that direction into action and learn from what follows.

The model brings together three layers — Stages, Gateways and Unlocks — to make visible not only how movement occurs, but where it becomes constrained and what may help it move again.

At its foundation is Cognitive Independence: Awareness, Agency and Accountability working together to support movement that remains perceptive, authored and capable of learning from experience.
